I believe most people drink coffee in the morning. Well, except for those aficionados who drink it all day long! But from the time I started getting up at four o’clock to write during that magical hour, I found that coffee at about eleven o’clock was perfect. So now that my scheduled writing time is mostly in the afternoon, I am still getting up at five or six (okay, darn it, yes some days at four!) and like my coffee at about eleven! I have no idea what the magic of eleven o’clock is, I just like coffee then.
My kids, not of my body but of my heart, often come up to my place at five or six AM to write scholarship essays or school papers. They like coffee then, like most of the civilized world. They stumble to the coffee machine and pour a cup in their favorite mug, adding the creamer they buy for my house instead of their own, and imbibe. That gets them started and our writing sessions become fruitful.
I like it better when I write without coffee to be honest. I think my writing is better. But I still like coffee for the flavor, with a great deal of sugar-free sweetener and creamer in it. Perhaps I like dessert better than actual coffee. I’ll never know. I do know that one of my favorite treats is making an entire pot of coffee and then drinking my two cups. I take it off the heat and treat the entire pot with sweetner and creamer before putting it in the refridgerator. That concoction sits through the night and is drunk the next day, a perfect iced coffee!
I hope that however you like your coffee, you have enough. Enough money, time, and stability of location to have a favorite coffee mug or three, favorite coffee, creamer, and sweetener of choice. I hope that some mornings you get up and drink a cup as you watch the sun come up, or your babies sleep. I hope sometimes you drink a cup at noon and listen to the wild geese returning to your area or look at a leaf in great detail. One of my favorite hopes for you is that you have a rocking chair in which you can slowly rock between sips, enjoying the flavor that moves the world, or at least the writing world.
I love this Ona! I have such a weird relationship with coffee. I only started drinking it within the last few years. I've learned that if I drink it after 12 noon - I'm up all night. I used to drink it sweet and milky - like dessert just like you :) But for the last year or two I just drink it straight black. And when I drink black coffee it is like a signal for my brain to push up my sleeves and get isht done. Time to put in the work! ☕
